Final Case Studies

Q Case Study Assignment – 60 points: Using and properly citing (APA format) material from the readings, in class presentations, and your own research, analyze each case study for the following components. Use at least 6 different class or other ECS resources throughout the paper to support your interpretation. You are choosing 2 of the 4 case studies. Alternative: You can write your own scenario as an alternate to one of the scenarios offered. You can choose a child you know or do a composite. DO CHANGE Names and other identifying information. You would then need to pick a different age group for your other case study. Analysis – (1 – 1 ½ pages) – Each Case Study How are the child’s behavior, development and/or interactions typical of a child their age? Be specific. Use the CDC milestones, information from the All About Young Children Website or another resource such as other EDEC classes, to support your interpretation of development. This can be bullet points. Is anything about the child’s behavior, development and/or interactions atypical of a child this age? Does the child’s differences suggest any of the mental health conditions including trauma discussed in class? What about other areas of development such as communication (speech and language)? You are not qualified to diagnose a child, but you may at times be encouraging a family to seek assessment. What risk factors are present in this family? What strengths/ protective factors are present in this family? You can use bullet points to describe list. Theory: (1/2 to 1 page) – Each Case Study Apply at least 1 theory or area of research to EACH scenario. As a resource use class readings, Canvas material, class lectures, PPTs, resources from other classes, and your own research. For each theory or area of research, include 2 connections to class reading or information from presentations. Topics might include attachment, trauma, ACES, relationships, emotional regulation, infant mental health, neurobiology of trauma, etc. DO NOT include topics discussed in the analysis section. In the analysis section you will discuss developmental milestones. DO NOT use general development in this section. Example, the ACES study, identified the impact of early adverse childhood experiences on adult physical and emotional health. In the case study, James’ mom, Grace, shares with her infant mental health specialist some information about her childhood. Her specialist discusses the impact of ACES with Grace. Dan Siegel and Mary Hartzell (2014) describe how, “Unresolved issues are similar to leftover issues, but they are more extreme, involving a disorganizing influence on both our internal lives and our interpersonal relationships.” (p. 5, 2014) Example: In The Emotional Life of the Toddler, numerous examples are given of the challenges of “being (and raising) a toddler.” These challenges stem from developmentally appropriate needs for autonomy and exploration as well as other aspects of development, temperament, and environment. In the case study, 18 month old Megan is demonstrating “secure base” behavior when she ventures out from her mother at the playground and runs back to ‘check in’ with her. Secure base … Name your source/ connection using APA citation; Use a quote or paraphrase from the source/ connection and strongly link it to the case study; explain how it applies, use quotes or paraphrase the case study. Intervention/ Support (2 pages) Strategies: What are some strategies you can suggest to the family based on what you have learned in class? State your role with the family (teacher, parent educator, therapist, child life specialist, art therapist, etc) and how these strategies are appropriate for your role. Resources/ Interventions: Often when working with families you need to support them with a referral. Is there an intervention or interventions you or a classmate studied appropriate for this family (you can contact classmates who studied the intervention). OR Is there another intervention or service outside of what we have studied in class that would support them. How do you know it is an effective intervention? Explain why you chose the intervention for this family and how you would introduce it. Reflection/ Self-Awareness/ Self-care. If you are the professional working with the family, what will be challenging for you? Practicing self-awareness and reflection, why is this challenging? How would you handle those challenges? Review Trauma-Informed Practices, Chapter 3, pp. 66-87. There are reflective questions on p. 87 that may be useful. Reflection and Advocacy (1 page) – This is an overall reflection and advocacy section – you do this once and it is in response to the overall class. Reflection What has changed in how your view children and families? Has anything changed in how you understand yourself, your life experiences and how they may influence your interactions with children, families, or other colleagues? Advocacy What is an issue you became more aware of and more interested in addressing this semester? Identify an organization working on this issue. How can you get involved? On a personal and professional level, how can you share information with others to help them understand how to promote healthy emotional development, prevent problems and provide adequate and effective support for those who need it? Examples of Organizations: Zerotothree, Momsrising, NAEYC, American Academy of Pediatricians, Partners in Health, Ounce of Prevention, Children’s Defense Fund, etc. Immigration and Family Separation: https://www.bustle.com/p/12-immigrant-advocacy-organizations-to-donate-to-if-you-cant-stand-trumps-family-separation-policy-9483834 (Links to an external site.) Page Count: Your paper should have 3 main sections – Scenario 1, Scenario 2, Overall Reflection Each scenario should be 3 ½ - 4 ½ pages. It is recommended you write 4-4 ½ pages to adequately cover each section. Reflection is 1 page Total paper should be 9-10 pages, 12 point font, double- spaced. Grade Sheet: Writing: 6 points for the overall paper. Please review the Early Childhood Studies Writing Standards. USE APA Citation. Include a reference list. Analysis: 16 points (8 points/ case study) Theory: 12 points (8 points/ case study) Intervention/ Support: 16 points (8 points/ case study) Advocacy and Reflection: 10 points Assignment must be submitted using Turn It In – See Due Date on Canvas. You may discuss the assignment with classmates, but every paper must be a unique and original product. The “Turn It In” tool screens for duplicated text.

Section 1: Scenario: Sasha is a four-year-old female kid who lives with her parents and a one-month-old younger sister. A normal four-year-old child's development is that they explore new and wonder about the objects around them, so they develop increasingly sociable with their age-group child ("Child Development: Preschooler (3-5 years old) | CDC", 2021). Their interactions with family and others influence their conduct, cognition, and personality ("Child Development: Preschooler (3-5 years old) | CDC", 2021). Sasha is typically showing age-appropriate behavior as she can “speaks in sentences, draws simple pictures, builds with blocks and has named all of her 20 or stuffed animals with first names and last names”.
